Recommendations for applicants to universities abroad

Getting into a university abroad is an inspiring process, but without preparation it turns into chaos. Start planning as early as possible. Requirements for applicants from Kyrgyzstan vary not only by country but also by specific university: somewhere you need the SAT or YÖS, somewhere — only IELTS and a school certificate with an apostille. Application deadlines often arrive sooner than you expect, especially in the USA, China and Korea.

Draw up a list of priority universities and study their conditions carefully. Find out which language exams they accept: IELTS, TOEFL, HSK, TOPIK, Goethe, DELF. Check whether standardised tests (SAT, GRE, GMAT) and entrance interviews are required.

Pay special attention to the statement of purpose or personal statement. This is your voice among hundreds of applications. Don't retell your school certificate. Explain why you chose this particular programme, this university, this country. How will the studies shape your career? The text should be sincere, logical and free of filler. The USA and the United Kingdom expect specifics and ambition; China and Germany — academic seriousness.

Letters of recommendation work for your image. Approach your teachers or mentors in advance — a month ahead, not a week. Give them the facts: which projects you led, which courses you took, what set you apart from other students. A personalised recommendation is worth far more than a templated «this student was good».

Think through the practical questions before departure. Visa requirements: for the USA — an interview and SEVIS; for the Schengen area — a student D visa with proof of funds; for Turkey — an e-visa is sometimes enough, but for long-term study there's a separate procedure. Medical insurance: not all policies cover dentistry or emergency hospitalisation. Housing: dormitory or rental — check the contract so you don't lose your deposit. Finances: how to open an account and transfer payments without losses. A smooth adaptation begins with preparation.

And finally: stay flexible. Studying abroad isn't only lectures and exams. A new culture, a different rhythm of life, unfamiliar habits. In China and Korea — a different system of communication and hierarchy. In Europe — more independence. In the UAE — a blend of cultures. This will broaden your horizons if you're ready to learn beyond the textbooks. And it will make your years of study truly valuable.
