UAE Student Visa: Residence Visa, Emirates ID and Working While You Study
The UAE has built a system where a study visa is a full residence permit. Everything runs through a sponsoring university, and the very concept of a «student visa» is in fact a two-stage process: first an entry permit, and after arrival — a residence permit. Citizens of Kyrgyzstan are not eligible for a visa on arrival, so everything is arranged in advance. The upsides: a simplified procedure handled by the university, annual renewal without leaving the country, and access to all the perks of the resident infrastructure — Emirates ID and medical insurance. The downside: there is no automatic post-study visa.

The Types of Visas
There is no single «student visa» in the UAE in the form of an entry stamp. Instead, there is a student residence permit sponsored by the university itself — the main option for full-time Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs. It is issued for one year and then renewed until the end of your studies. Most universities handle the entire procedure: from application to obtaining the Emirates ID.
If your parents are already UAE residents, you can be sponsored under them — men up to the age of 25, women with no age limit. For short-term programs and language courses, a short-term study visa is issued for 30, 60 or 180 days — no residence permit is granted under it.
There is also the Golden Visa for outstanding students — 10 years of residence for those who graduated from a UAE school with distinction of 95%+ or from a university in the world's top 100. The GPA requirements are usually between 3.5 and 3.8, but it is best to check at the time of application.
The Key Rules
Kyrgyzstan is not on the list of countries whose citizens can obtain a visa on arrival. This means that every citizen of Kyrgyzstan — regardless of the purpose of travel — must obtain a visa authorization before boarding the plane. Without a visa, you will not be allowed on board.
A student visa in the UAE is a full residence permit. You receive an Emirates ID (the key resident document), you can rent housing, open a bank account and arrange medical insurance. Tourists are not permitted to study in the UAE, even on short-term courses.
How Much Money You Need to Show
There is no clear-cut government minimum amount — the requirements depend on the specific university. For example, Abu Dhabi University wants to see 15,000 dollars in the sponsor's account. In most cases it is enough to confirm around 40,000–60,000 dirhams per year (11,000–16,500 dollars) for tuition and living. If you plan to work up to 20 hours a week, you can count on 1,600–1,800 dirhams a month for everyday expenses.
What is accepted? A bank statement in your name or for your parents' account — in which case an affidavit of support and proof of kinship are required. All documents are translated into Arabic or English, and bank statements are legalized.

How the Procedure Works
Everything runs through the university, not through the embassy. You cannot apply on your own.
First, you receive an unconditional letter of acceptance from an accredited UAE university and pay the tuition deposit — usually 5,000–15,000 dirhams. The university then submits an application for a Student Entry Permit through the federal authority ICP. The wait is 3–10 working days. After approval, the entry permit is sent to you.
With it you enter the UAE, and you have a limited window (usually 30–60 days) to undergo a medical examination — tests for HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis. You then register for the Emirates ID, and after all the procedures you receive a residence permit stamp in your passport and a plastic Emirates ID card.
The total duration is 4–6 weeks. Government fees are 3,000–4,500 dirhams (around 820–1,225 dollars). The process can be sped up for an additional fee — the entry permit is then issued in 7–10 working days.
The documents you need are: a passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay), a letter of acceptance, proof of deposit payment, a passport-format photo on a white background, a school certificate or diploma with legalization and translation, medical insurance covering the visa period, and financial proof.
Working While You Study
There is no automatic right to work under a student residence permit. To work legally, the employer must obtain a separate permit through the Ministry of Human Resources (MoHRE) — a process that takes 2–4 weeks. The university's written consent is also required — a No Objection Certificate.
As for hours: UAE law does not set a fixed limit specifically for students, but in practice employers grant no more than 15–20 hours a week during the semester (it all depends on the university's policy). During holidays you can work full-time — up to 40–48 hours a week. Working without a permit is a violation of the law and carries the risk of visa cancellation.
Rates: in retail and hospitality — 15–25 dirhams an hour; private tutoring — 50–150 dirhams an hour. At 20 hours a week you can earn up to 1,800 dirhams a month — enough to cover everyday expenses.
After Graduation
Your student residence permit is cancelled after your studies are officially completed. The grace period is from 30 to 180 days (depending on the emirate and the immigration policy at the time). During this period you must either obtain a work visa or leave. It is best to check the current term with the immigration service in advance.
The paths after graduation are as follows. A work visa — the employer sponsors your visa, the process takes 2–3 weeks, the minimum starting salary is 8,000–15,000 dirhams a month (€2,000–€3,800), and there is no income tax. The UAE has no dedicated post-study visa as in Australia or Britain, but the employer-led procedure is simple and quick.
For the best graduates there is the Golden Visa — 5 or 10 years of independent residence without an employer. Requirements: graduates of accredited UAE universities with a GPA of at least 3.5–3.8 (depending on the program). The residence permit is issued for up to 10 years, though recent graduates may initially be granted 5 years. A job offer is not required — you apply yourself.

How Not to Lose Your Status
You need to renew your visa annually through the university — this requires confirmation that you are continuing your studies. Always carry your Emirates ID with you and present it on request. If you change your address, notify the immigration service.
You may not interrupt your studies without official permission. You may not work without MoHRE authorization and the university's consent. If you overstay your visa even by a few days — fines and immigration problems follow. You cannot remain in the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days without cancelling your visa — the visa will be revoked. You cannot use an old visa if you already have a valid one — a new one will not be issued until the old one is cancelled.
Pitfalls
A refusal is not always a verdict. In the UAE, refusals are often issued on «general grounds» without a real reason, but this can be challenged through an administrative procedure — by submitting a reasoned letter of petition addressed to the GDRFA, correcting technical errors in the documents.
Documents have a short life. A certificate of no criminal record is valid for only 3 months. Medical insurance must be arranged in advance. An apostille and translation into Arabic are required for all official papers.
Legalization of documents is mandatory. Your school certificates and diplomas must be legalized (for Kyrgyzstan, a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille) and translated into Arabic or English with notarization.
Financial history matters. A sudden deposit of a large sum before applying will raise questions. The money should have a clear history, and ideally sit in the account for at least 3–6 months.
For Applicants from Kyrgyzstan
The UAE has no embassy in Bishkek. The entire process runs through the university: an online application, and after approval — an entry invitation. A visa is required for citizens of Kyrgyzstan in absolutely all cases: tourism, business, transit, study — always. Kyrgyzstan does not grant the right to a visa on arrival, so arrange it before departure. And remember: a visa can only be cancelled by the organization that issued it. If you still have an old, uncancelled visa, a new one will not be granted.
Conclusion
The UAE student visa is a residence visa with a two-stage procedure: first an entry permit from the university, then, after arrival and a medical examination — a residence permit. The university sponsors you and handles all the formalities. The main requirements: finances of at least 15,000 dollars (or 40,000–60,000 dirhams per year), enrollment at an accredited university and valid medical insurance. You may work up to 15–20 hours a week while studying, but a separate permit from the employer and the university's consent are required. After graduation you are given a grace period of 30 to 180 days to switch to a work visa or obtain a Golden Visa for 5–10 years with strong academic results.
