Turkey's student visa: entry visa, ikamet and work after graduation

Turkey has built a two-stage system: first you obtain an entry study visa (öğrenci vizesi) at the embassy in your home country, and after arrival you arrange a student residence permit (öğrenci ikamet izni). The main change of recent years is an unequivocal ban on entering on a tourist visa and then switching to studying. The migration service is rejecting such applications en masse. The advantages for students from Kyrgyzstan: a comparatively low financial threshold (6,000–10,000 dollars), the ability to work up to 24 hours a week (Bachelor's students — only from the second year, Master's and doctoral students — from the first semester) and 6 months after graduation to look for work.

Types of visa and who needs what

Turkey does not issue a «ready-made» student visa for the entire period. Instead, there are two documents:

  • The entry study visa (öğrenci vizesi) — a sticker in your passport, valid for up to 90 days. It is needed only for entry and initial registration.

  • The student residence permit (öğrenci ikamet izni) — a biometric card issued by Turkey's Migration Service after arrival. It is precisely this that gives you the right to live and study legally for the duration of the programme. Its term is up to 1 year, with annual renewal.

Short-term language courses (up to 90 days) are possible on a tourist or electronic visa, but for a full Bachelor's or Master's degree only a study visa is acceptable. If you change the purpose of your trip after entering on a tourist visa, you will not be able to obtain a student ikamet.

The main rule: a tourist visa for studying no longer works

Previously, many people entered on a tourist e-Visa or visa-free and then applied for ikamet on the spot. Now this is officially prohibited (Article 32 of Law No. 6458). Such applications are rejected, and the fact of refusal is recorded in your file and reduces your chances in subsequent attempts. Only an öğrenci vizesi obtained in your home country before the trip will do.

Financial requirements: how much you need to show

There is no rigid fixed sum in the law, but consulates expect from 6,000 to 10,000 US dollars for the first year (accommodation + tuition). The real cost of living for a student is 500–800 dollars a month depending on the city.

What is accepted:

  • Bank statements for the last 3–6 months (yours or your parents').

  • A sponsorship letter from your parents with statements and proof of kinship.

  • A scholarship (for example, Türkiye Bursları).

  • A return ticket (you are sometimes asked to show it).

The money must have a clear history of deposits. A sudden crediting of a large sum on the eve of your application is a red flag. It is better for the funds to have been in place for at least 3 months.

The application process for citizens of Kyrgyzstan

Obtain a letter of admission (kabul mektubu) from an accredited Turkish university, fill in the application form and book an appointment through the consular system. After this you need to gather the package of documents (list below), submit the documents in person and attend an interview, and pay the visa fee (check the amount with the embassy). You will have to wait for a decision for 2 to 8 weeks. Documents should be submitted at least 8 weeks before departure.

Main documents:

  • A passport (valid for at least 6 months after entry).

  • An application form and two photographs (50×60 mm).

  • A letter of admission from the university.

  • Educational documents (school certificate, diplomas, transcripts) with a translation into Turkish.

  • Financial proof (statements for 3–6 months).

  • Medical insurance for the first months.

On arrival: obtaining the ikamet

After entry you have 30 days to submit an application for a student residence permit. Missing the deadline risks a fine, cancellation of the visa and deportation.

The process:

  • Register on e-İkamet (e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr).

  • Fill in the form and select the type — student.

  • Appear at the provincial migration service on the appointed date (give your fingerprints, pay the fee — the state duty is around 810 TL plus the cost of the card (964 TL), for a total of approximately 1,774 TL; additional service fees may increase the sum to 1,500–2,000 TL).

  • Receive the ikamet card (term — up to 1 year, with annual renewal).

Documents: a passport with the visa, the printed form, a student certificate from the university, 4 photographs, proof of address, medical insurance.

Working during your studies

It is allowed, but with clear rules. The work permit (çalışma izni) is arranged on your behalf by the employer through the e-izin system. You cannot apply for it yourself.

Restrictions:

  • Bachelor's students — only from the second year.

  • Master's and doctoral students — from the first semester.

  • During studies — no more than 24 hours a week.

  • During the holidays — full-time.

  • Working without a permit — a violation with the risk of deportation and an entry ban.

After graduation: 6 months to look for work

The student ikamet automatically remains valid for 6 months after the end of your studies. During this period you can legally remain in the country, look for work and arrange a work residence permit. If you do not find work, you can apply for a short-term ikamet to continue the search. For highly qualified specialists there is the Turquoise Card (Turkuaz Kart) — an analogue of the EU «Blue Card». It is issued for up to 3 years, then becomes indefinite, gives the right to work without additional permits and is a direct path to permanent residence.

Maintaining your status and restrictions

Obligations: renew your ikamet annually, notify the migration service of any change of address within 10 days, and attend classes.

You may not: interrupt your studies without permission, work without a permit, or let your ikamet expire (a fine + an entry ban of up to 5 years).

Pitfalls and realities

Translations and the apostille. Kyrgyzstan is a party to the Hague Convention, so you need an apostille on your educational documents and a certified translation into Turkish (by a sworn translator).

Submission deadlines. At peak season (June–August), embassy slots are snapped up within days. Plan 3–4 months before the start of your studies.

Language. Basic Turkish (A1–A2) at the interview is a big plus, although it is not formally required.

What is important for applicants from Kyrgyzstan

Citizens of Kyrgyzstan have the right to visa-free tourist entry (up to 90 days), but this does not work for studying — you need specifically an öğrenci vizesi. It is better to have your documents translated into Turkish in your home country, before departure (translation services are more expensive in Turkey).

Conclusion

The Turkish student visa is a two-stage system with clear rules: the entry study visa (öğrenci vizesi) → arrival → arranging the ikamet within 30 days. The main requirements: finances of 6,000–10,000 dollars with a 3–6 month history, confirmed enrolment at a university and refraining from attempts to enter on a tourist visa. The advantages are working up to 24 hours a week (from the second year for Bachelor's students, from the first semester for Master's students) and 6 months after graduation to look for work without unnecessary formalities.
