Australian Student Visa: GS Requirements, Finances and the Path from Study to Work
Australia has substantially reshaped its student visa system in recent years. The main changes: replacing the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) declaration with the structured GS (Genuine Student) questionnaire, raising the financial threshold to 29,710 Australian dollars a year, lifting the language bar to IELTS 6.0 and returning to a limit of 48 working hours per fortnight. The system has become stricter but more transparent. For those ready to document their study intent, Australia remains one of the most attractive destinations, with generous post-study opportunities.

The Visa Type and Who It Suits
Subclass 500 (Student visa) is the single type for all international students enrolling in full-time programs of any length: from language courses and vocational education (colleges) to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD. Short courses of up to 90 days can be done on a tourist visa, but full-fledged study requires the Subclass 500, submitted online through the ImmiAccount portal. The application can be filed from Kyrgyzstan, without leaving the country. The visa's validity is tied to the length of the study program (a maximum of 5 years).
The Main Filter: GS Instead of GTE
On 23 March 2024 Australia replaced the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) essay with the new GS (Genuine Student) standard. The meaning has shifted: previously you had to prove that you were here temporarily and would definitely leave; now it is enough to show that you are coming specifically to study, rather than to work or immigrate under the guise of a student. Formally, it is five specific questions in the form, with each answer no longer than 150 words. In essence, it is your academic and career logic: why you chose this particular field, this university, how it connects to your previous education and what you intend to do with the degree afterwards.
Important: citizens of certain countries (the list includes a number of states) are required to apply through an accredited agent and complete an additional GS Stage 2 form, a CV and a detailed personal statement. Although Kyrgyzstan is not currently on this list, you should check the up-to-date requirements with the embassy before applying.
Financial Requirements
Australia has raised the minimum threshold of confirmed funds from 24,505 to 29,710 Australian dollars a year (roughly 17,500–18,000 US dollars depending on the exchange rate). You must show this amount in addition to the cost of the first year of tuition (stated in the Confirmation of Enrolment). Although the official requirements do not prescribe a strict holding period for the funds, in practice the migration service expects the money to have been in the account for at least 3 months and to have a clear origin; a sudden deposit of a large sum shortly before applying will raise questions. Statements from a personal account, a parents' account (proof of kinship required) or a scholarship letter are accepted.
Our recommendation: keep a comfortable buffer in the account — 35,000–40,000 Australian dollars to be convincing, especially if your university falls into the high-risk category.

English Language
Since July 2024 the minimum IELTS threshold for the Subclass 500 has been raised from 5.5 to 6.0 (no lower than 5.5 in each component). PTE Academic (minimum 50) and TOEFL iBT are also accepted. Online tests and at-home versions are not accepted. If you are enrolling in medical, legal, teaching or nursing programs, the threshold may be higher — IELTS 7.0–7.5. Some universities offer conditional admission followed by language courses — check with the specific institution.
Health and Insurance
A mandatory requirement for all applicants is Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). The policy must be issued by an Australian provider approved by the Department of Health. The insurance must cover your entire stay, starting from the date of arrival. The cost is around 500–700 Australian dollars a year. Without valid OSHC the embassy will not issue the visa, and its absence in Australia is a breach of visa condition 8501.
In some cases (those staying longer than 6 months or enrolling at medical institutions) an additional medical examination by a doctor accredited in Australia may be required.
The Application Process for Citizens of Kyrgyzstan
Australia has no embassy in Kyrgyzstan; visa matters are handled by the Australian Embassy in Almaty (Kazakhstan). The application is submitted online through ImmiAccount. Biometrics (fingerprints) are provided at an authorized Australian visa center; the one nearest to Kyrgyzstan is in Almaty.
Step by step:
-
Obtain an unconditional offer from an Australian university (Letter of Offer).
-
Accept the offer, pay the deposit (usually part of the annual cost), receive the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
-
Submit the application online through ImmiAccount. Attach the CoE, passport, financial documents, OSHC and language certificate.
-
Answer the five GS questions in the form (clearly, without generic phrases).
-
Pay the fee — around 1,600 Australian dollars for 2026.
-
If required by the embassy, undergo a medical examination and provide biometrics.
-
Wait for a decision — from 4 to 12 weeks.
-
Key documents: passport, CoE, a 3-month bank statement, OSHC, IELTS/PTE, school certificate/diploma with translation, birth certificate.

Working While You Study
Since July 2023 the limit is 48 hours per fortnight during the semester, and unlimited during holidays. Research Master's and PhD students are exempt from the limits. An important rule: you may only start working after you have begun classes. Exceeding the limit is a direct breach of visa conditions, with the risk of visa cancellation.
After Graduation: Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485)
Australia's main bonus is the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485). Bachelor's, Master's and PhD graduates can obtain from 2 to 5 years of legal work in Australia, depending on their level of education and field.
Basic conditions:
-
Completion of at least 2 years of full-time study.
-
Submitting the application within 6 months of receiving the diploma.
-
Aged under 35 (research Master's students and PhD candidates retain the right to apply up to the age of 50).
On the Subclass 485 you can work full-time without restrictions, change employers and professions. It is a direct path to experience and, after that, to permanent residence through skilled migration (the general points system) or employer sponsorship.

Pitfalls and Realities
GS is not a formality. Visa refusals are most often linked precisely to the five answers being deemed unconvincing. Specifics and a logical connection between your past, present and future are critically important.
Financial history. A sudden deposit of a large sum into the account a month before applying is a red flag. The funds must have a clear origin, and although no strict period is set, in practice it is recommended that they sit in the account for at least 3 months.
Application timing. The application can be submitted after receiving the CoE; the visa window opens 124 days before the course start date. Plan your submission at least 2–3 months before the date stated in the CoE, allowing time for the medical examination (up to 4 weeks) and ImmiAccount processing. Do not start working before official visa confirmation and the start of classes — this too constitutes a breach of conditions.
What Matters for Applicants from Kyrgyzstan
The Australian Embassy in Almaty handles visa matters for citizens of Kyrgyzstan. All applications are submitted online; biometrics are provided in Almaty. Plan your trip to Kazakhstan in advance. Bear in mind that Kyrgyzstan falls into the category of countries subject to heightened scrutiny of financial documentation. We recommend approaching the preparation of statements with the utmost care: translate them into English, have them notarized and ensure a clear origin of the funds.
Conclusion
The Australian student visa is a modern system — stricter than before, but with clear criteria. The main requirements: finances of at least 29,710 Australian dollars a year (with a clear history), IELTS 6.0, answers to the five GS questions with transparent logic, and mandatory OSHC. The upsides are working up to 48 hours per fortnight and the post-study Subclass 485 visa for up to 3 years. The downsides are the long processing times (up to 12 weeks) and the need to travel to Almaty for biometrics. With careful document preparation and a convincing justification of your study purpose, the visa is attainable, and the post-study opportunities make Australia one of the best options for long-term career planning.
